What happens at a check-up at Tickhill Dental?
When you make an appointment with one of the dentists at Tickhill Dental & Implant Centre, you can expect to receive high-quality, personal care. Your dentist can discuss overall oral healthcare options with you, suggest best practices for oral hygiene, diagnose any dental problems requiring treatment, and perform general maintenance and cleaning. Your dentist may also make recommendations for further treatment to prevent decay and disease, such as fillings, root canals and gum surgery, as well as elective procedures to correct and perfect your smile, from restorations to teeth whitening and dental implants.
What procedures can my general dentist carry out?
As your primary care dental provider, a general dentist can carry out many different procedures, including extractions, wisdom teeth removal, dental x-rays and root canals. Your dentist can diagnose and manage your overall oral healthcare needs during a check-up, including whether you need a composite (or white filling), tooth extraction, root canal, bridge, or crown.
How can I tell if I need a root canal?
There are several symptoms of a root canal that you may or may not notice. If you do experience any of these, call your dentist immediately to set up an examination.
Pain: this is often the first indicator that something is wrong at the tooth root. Exposed nerves or broken tooth: if you leave a broken tooth or exposed nerve untreated, infection may occur and you may need to completely extract the tooth in the future.
Sensitivity to heat and cold: if you have an exposed root, you might be susceptible to temperature fluctuations.
Swollen gums: if you notice any swelling that does not go away, and is not from a recognisable source (bitten cheek, etc.), this might be a sign of infection.

Why would I need a root canal and what does it involve?
Under the tooth’s two hard outer layers – enamel and dentine – lies the tooth pulp, a collection of blood vessels, nerves and connective tissue. When cavities, gum disease or tooth decay set in, or an injury occurs, the pulp can become infected. Root canal treatment involves the removal of the pulp, followed by filling and restorative dental work – a process that can take a few hours, yet it considered a routine procedure. Root canal treatment usually provides instant relief from the pain of an infected tooth.

How long will it take to get a composite filling?
The amount of time needed to successfully place a composite filling depends on a number of factors, including the amount of tooth decay, the position of the tooth in the mouth, the number of tooth surfaces involved, and the expertise of the dentist. The time can range from 10-15 minutes (not counting prep) to 30 minutes. For a more accurate prediction, and to discuss all your options for your teeth, set up a consultation with us today.
