Children’s Dentistry
Check-ups, fissure sealants and oral health education
Children’s dentistry is all about prevention – and it’s never too early to start teaching your children about good oral hygiene. Whether your child or teenager requires speciality dental treatments or just needs a regular children’s dental check-up, the South Yorkshire team at Tickhill Dental can help! Children’s dentistry from an early age is the best way to lower your family’s chance of tooth decay and gum disease, so bring your child to see us as soon as their baby teeth appear, or by the age of one. With regular check-ups at Tickhill Dental, you’ll be setting up your children for a lifetime of healthy smiles.
How young can a child be to have dental work done?
There is no such thing as being too young to see a dentist! At Tickhill Dental, we recommend you bring your children to see us as soon as their baby teeth appear – and by the age of one even if no teeth are showing. Your children’s teeth are important, and childhood can be rough and tumble – but rest assured we can treat even baby teeth that have been chipped or damaged. As a parent, you’ll need to protect your children’s teeth with regular check-ups, and follow the oral health advice your dentist and hygienist give you – that means brushing twice a day, giving them a balanced diet and limiting sugary drinks and snacks.
What can I expect at a children’s dental check-up?
During your child’s first dental check-up, your dentist will evaluate the overall dental health and oral hygiene of your child – including their risk of tooth decay and gum disease. They will check your child’s bite and jaw for any issues, and may do a specialised cleaning to remove any stains or deposits on the tooth. This is also a time to discuss ways to teach dental health to your child, and establish good eating habits and hygiene – the earlier in childhood you do this, the more likely those habits are to stick for life.
What are the most important oral hygiene tips for children?
The most important oral hygiene tips we can give you are to start early, and stay positive. Kids learn and develop by copying their parents – so if you brush and floss every day, visit the dentist often and talk about the dentist in a positive way, your children will want to do the same. Though some children are genetically more likely to experience dental problems, the majority of kids will benefit hugely from these simple steps to a long-term healthy smile.
Do children need fluoride in water?
Most children get the correct amount of fluoride with their toothpaste, and in water they drink from the tap. Community water fluoridation is an extremely effective and inexpensive way of assisting in the prevention of tooth decay.
Should children get fissure sealants?
Fissure sealants are a safe and painless way to protect children’s adult teeth from tooth decay. A fissure sealant is a plastic coating that covers the biting surface of back teeth. This prevent food and bacteria from getting stuck in those hard-to-brush tooth grooves (fissures), which in turn causes cavities. Fissure sealants are simple and painless, and thus a good option to protect against future tooth decay. If you want to provide your child with this extra level of protection, set up a consultation with one of our team, and we can discuss whether it would be beneficial for your child.
